Beechworth Heritage adopts safety policy

Beechworth Heritage has adopted a participant safety and wellbeing policy, incorporating Victoria's Child Safe Standards, as it looks to encourage young people in local schools to 'dig into Beechworth' history.

The move follows constructive discussions with the Social Services Regulator (SSR), an independent statutory authority that safeguards the rights of children, young people, and people who use social service, roles previously undertaken by by the Commission for Children and Young People (CYCP).

"Beechworth Heritage has written a policy that responds to the state's Child Safe Standards," president Jamie Kronborg said.

"As a small volunteer-run heritage society, we confirmed with the Regulator that our organisation is not currently required to comply with the Child Safe Standards to work in our rural communities.

"But it's a prudent step ahead of new history and heritage partnerships that we're looking to develop with our schools."
